A big day for everyone

Mid-April is a stressful time for adults and teenagers alike.  Parents are digging up receipts and tax forms, and seniors in high school are obsessively checking their mailboxes and online admissions pages.

Here at Abacus, we just have to sit and wait for the news to come in.  It looks like it’s going to be a good year for our students.  Their SAT scores increased by an average of 100 points, and so far they’ve been accepted to Georgetown, GW, Emory, Northwestern, and Dartmouth.  Congratulations — you know who you are! And for those of our students waiting for envelopes, we’re keeping our fingers crossed and we know there will be good news in the near future.

Inspiration and the College Essay

‘Tis the season for holidays, days off school, family get-togethers, and… college applications. If you’re a senior in high school, you’re either camped out at the mailbox awaiting notification of your early application decision or slaving away at your computer trying to think of a brilliant, amazing, mind-blowing college essay that will tell the admissions committee the story of your life, including everything fantastic about you, in a unique and memorable way — in 500 words.

Spring has sprung. Are you ready?

April isn’t just tax month. It’s also admissions month. Even with midterms barely gone, finals are looming on the horizon. Students everywhere are entering into the busiest time of the year. For some, it’s the beginning of the end: for our Abacus students who have already jumped through the hoops and now find themselves having to choose between their top choices for college (a happy conundrum), we’d like to offer our congratulations.

When should I take the SAT subject tests?

Spring is just around the corner, and plenty of students and parents are facing the same scheduling issue: when should we schedule the SAT: subject tests? For many students taking the SAT in the spring of their junior year, the prospect of adding another barrage of tests to the to-do list is daunting, to say the least. The temptation is to push those tests to the fall and say, “with the SAT out of the way, I’ll have all summer to study for the subject tests.”

That may be true, but it also may not be the best option for you. (more…)
